Affiliate disclosure.

Plain English. Last updated 2026-05-25.

Short version

Some outbound links on ExpatWhy are affiliate links. If you click and buy, we earn a commission. The commission neverchanges our editorial verdict, we recommend providers we'd send our own families to.

Required by law

Under the FTC Endorsement Guides (US) and § 5a UWG / § 6 TMG (Germany), we're required to disclose any material connection with a recommended product or service. This page is that disclosure for all current and future commercial placements on ExpatWhy. Each affiliate card also has an inline disclosure right below the call-to-action.

Who we currently partner with

This list updates as partnerships are added or removed. Live partnerships are only those whose env vars are configured on our deployment.

  • SafetyWing, Nomad Insurance

Commission: ~$50-100 per qualified policy + 10% recurring monthly. Placement: inline cards in the "verified signals" section of city detail pages.

  • Wise, Money transfer

Commission: £15-30 per qualified signup. Placement: inline cards in cost and visa sections, relevant when you're sending rent in foreign currency.

  • Airalo, eSIM data

Commission: ~10% of plan price. Placement: inline card on the personalized shortlist page, where arranging connectivity for the trip is the relevant action.

  • iVisa

Commission: $5-10 per visa application initiated through our link. No active placement on the site yet; it will appear in visa sections once live.

How we keep editorial independent

  • The 200-250-word editorial entry is written before any affiliate placement is decided.
  • Affiliate cards are clearly labeled, every card shows the partner name and the FTC-required disclosure ("ExpatWhy earns a commission on qualifying actions").
  • No partner has ever asked us to change a verdict, and we've declined a few that asked to be presented uncritically.
  • The verdict line ("for nomads who...") on every city page names who shouldn'tlive there, that's the integrity test.

What this means for you

If you click an affiliate link and buy, we earn, at no extra cost to you (the commission comes from the partner's marketing budget, not from your wallet). If you don't want to support ExpatWhy that way, just navigate to the partner directly. No hard feelings, and the editorial is the same regardless.

Sponsored placements

Separate from affiliate revenue, ExpatWhy may accept sponsored placements from tourism boards, coworking chains, or relocation services. These are always clearly labeled as "Sponsored" and presented separately from the editorial flow. The editorial content of the city profile itself is never adjusted in exchange for sponsorship.
