The best small cities, under 300,000 people
Most nomad lists recycle the same ten capitals. This one excludes every city over 300,000 people and re-ranks what remains by the overall nomad score, the same cost, internet, safety, air and visa blend used across the site. Small-town Japan, Atlantic Canada and Taiwan's east coast fill the top ten, places where fiber, cafés and transit survived the small population.

frequently asked
Quick answers.
- What is the best small city for digital nomads in 2026?
- Nikko in Japan leads on our data: about 80,000 people, 200 Mbps internet, an 8.3/10 safety score and solo costs under $800 a month. Moncton in Canada and Takayama in Japan sit directly behind it.
- Why do Japan and Canada dominate this list?
- Both countries push big-city infrastructure into small municipalities: nationwide fiber, reliable transit and high peace-index scores do not drop off with population the way they do elsewhere. Japan's weak-yen period also keeps its small-city costs unusually low.
- Is a small city practical without a car?
- In the Japanese and Taiwanese entries, yes, they are rail-connected and walkable. The Atlantic-Canada entries are more car-dependent outside their compact centres. Each city page lists the transit figure used in its cost breakdown.
