Cheap and safe, the cities that deliver both
Cheap usually trades against safe: most sub-$900 cities sit in countries with mid-table peace scores. This list keeps only cities scoring 7+ on our GPI-derived safety scale, then ranks what survives by solo monthly cost. Malaysia and small-town Japan dominate it, which surprises people who assume safe Asia starts at Singapore prices.

frequently asked
Quick answers.
- What is the cheapest safe city for digital nomads in 2026?
- On our data, Langkawi in Malaysia: around $773 a month solo cost with a 7.2/10 safety score and 130 Mbps residential internet. Mainland Malaysian hubs such as George Town, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur follow within about $100 of it.
- How is "safe" measured here?
- The safety score is derived from the country's Global Peace Index 2024 ranking, normalised to a 0-10 scale. It is a country-level indicator, so it will not capture neighbourhood-level differences inside one city.
- Why is so much of this list Malaysia and Japan?
- Both countries pair high peace-index scores with a weak-currency period that keeps solo costs unusually low, under $900 a month in secondary cities. Japan's entries are smaller cities such as Nikko and Hakone, not Tokyo or Osaka.
