best of, cost × safety

Cheap and safe, the cities that deliver both

Cheap usually trades against safe: most sub-$900 cities sit in countries with mid-table peace scores. This list keeps only cities scoring 7+ on our GPI-derived safety scale, then ranks what survives by solo monthly cost. Malaysia and small-town Japan dominate it, which surprises people who assume safe Asia starts at Singapore prices.

frequently asked

Quick answers.

What is the cheapest safe city for digital nomads in 2026?
On our data, Langkawi in Malaysia: around $773 a month solo cost with a 7.2/10 safety score and 130 Mbps residential internet. Mainland Malaysian hubs such as George Town, Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur follow within about $100 of it.
How is "safe" measured here?
The safety score is derived from the country's Global Peace Index 2024 ranking, normalised to a 0-10 scale. It is a country-level indicator, so it will not capture neighbourhood-level differences inside one city.
Why is so much of this list Malaysia and Japan?
Both countries pair high peace-index scores with a weak-currency period that keeps solo costs unusually low, under $900 a month in secondary cities. Japan's entries are smaller cities such as Nikko and Hakone, not Tokyo or Osaka.
