NOAA's IBTrACS archives every named tropical cyclone since 1980, with 3-hourly waypoints. We checked all 306,000 waypoints against every city center, these cities sit completely outside the storm belt. Verified absence, not vibes.

Quick answers.
- Doesn't “outside the storm belt” depend on climate change?
- Possibly, IBTrACS captures 45 years of historical tracks. A city with zero exposure since 1980 has a very low baseline risk. Future shifts may change the picture; the dataset is updated yearly.
- What about extra-tropical storms or hurricanes that lose strength?
- IBTrACS records the full track until extratropical transition, so a hurricane that becomes a regular winter storm before reaching the city would still count. Lisbon shows 9 storms (Atlantic remnants like Leslie); Berlin shows zero.
- What's the radius?
- 200 km from the city center, close enough that storm damage, evacuations and power outages are realistic. We also count Cat-1+ landfalls separately on each city page.
