The Pont des Martyrs is the central bridge, named for the 1991 pro-democracy protesters; the Grand Marché runs along Avenue de l'Indépendance; the National Museum holds the regional ethnographic collection; the Koulouba presidential palace sits on the hill above. The river itself, navigable to Mopti in the wet season, is the historical artery.

The friction is the security context and is not negotiable. The US State Department, UK FCDO, and most EU governments maintain Level 4 / "Do Not Travel" advisories for Mali citing terrorism, kidnapping, and the post-2020 political situation; Bamako itself is the most controlled city but the threat picture is real and travel insurance is often invalidated by these advisories. Practical operating conditions in the capital include reliable daytime activity, curfews that have come and gone, fuel-supply disruptions that recur, and a French military and UN MINUSMA departure (completed 2024) that has reshaped the security environment. The harmattan (December-February) brings dust; the rainy season (June-September) brings cooler nights and Niger-River flooding.

Visa-on-arrival exists on paper at Bamako-Sénou airport but is unreliable in practice, the realistic plan is a visa from a Malian embassy in advance (Paris, Dakar, Abidjan, Algiers handle this; 30-90 days, around €100-150). Hôpital du Mali and Hôpital Gabriel Touré handle routine; medevac to Dakar, Casablanca, or Paris is the realistic plan for anything serious, and a confirmed medevac contract is non-optional. Malaria is intense; prophylaxis is non-optional. Bamako-Sénou runs direct to Paris, Casablanca, Istanbul, Dakar, Addis Ababa.
