Kingstown is the gateway to the Grenadines, Bequia, Mustique, Tobago Cays, sitting under a volcano that erupted four years ago and a 30-day visa clock.

The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
The capital of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (population 12,000) is a working colonial-era port on the southwest coast of the main island. The Eastern Caribbean dollar is pegged 2.7:1 to USD. The reason to be here is not Kingstown itself, it's the Grenadines chain to the south: Bequia (1-hour ferry), Mustique, the Tobago Cays Marine Park, Union Island. La Soufrière volcano on northern Saint Vincent erupted in April 2021, blanketed the island in 10cm of ash, and forced 20,000 evacuations, the northern third of the island remains in recovery. Fort Charlotte above Kingstown is the photogenic colonial relic.
Rents are cheaper than most Caribbean capitals: furnished 1BR in Kingstown or Villa runs XCD 1,800-3,500 ($670-1,300/month); on Bequia closer to $1,500-2,500. Hurricane season June through November plus active volcanism is the layered geological risk, VolcanoDiscovery still lists La Soufrière as restless. Dry season December to April, 25-29°C.
Visa is short: 30 days visa-free for most Western passports, extendable to 90 at immigration. No formal DNV. Internet is fibre 100-300 Mbps via Flow or Digicel, slower than Barbados. English is official. Inter-island ferries (Admiralty Transport, Bequia Express) leave Kingstown daily.
