At 2,400 m in northern Yunnan, Lijiang's Old Town (Dayan) is a maze of canal-laced grey-tile Naxi courtyards under the snow ridge of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596 m), with the Mu Family Mansion anchoring the southern quarter. The prefecture holds 1.245M people but the walled core lives off Chinese tourism, 50M domestic visitors a year, and foreign nomads are a rounding error.
A 1-bedroom in Shuhe or the newer Xiangshan district runs ¥1,800-3,200 ($250-440) furnished; inside the Old Town walls landlords quote double for short stays. Climate is the draw: dry sunny winters (Jan 2-15°C), wet monsoon Jun-Aug (rain 18-22 days/month), peak shoulder Apr-May and Oct. Altitude headaches hit hard the first 72 hours. Air is clean (PM2.5 ~20 µg/m³) but coal smoke spikes in January.
China runs no nomad visa. Most foreigners use the 144-hour transit visa-free policy (must enter via Kunming Changshui and exit to a third country), or an L tourist visa (30/60 days) extended once at the Lijiang PSB on Fuhui Lu. Z and R work visas need a sponsor. Mobile data needs an eSIM or a Chinese SIM with passport registration; VPN access is brittle. English outside hotels is nonexistent, WeChat translate is daily infrastructure.
