editorial
The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
The security caveat goes first. Since the February 2021 military coup the country has been at civil war. The US, UK, Australian, Canadian, and most EU governments advise against all travel to Myanmar. Travel insurance generally won't cover you. Banking is broken, most international card networks have pulled out and you bring cash USD (crisp, unmarked, 2013+ bills) and change at black-market rates that float around 5,000 MMK/$1 versus the official 2,100. ATMs largely don't work for foreign cards.
If you accept that and go: rooms near Mandalay Hill run 25-60 USD/night cash. Mandalay Palace is mostly a 1990s reconstruction (the original burned in 1945). Mandalay Hill at sunset is the standard arrival. Kuthodaw Pagoda's 729 marble tablets, the "world's largest book," each tablet a page of the Tipitaka, are the real reason to come. U Bein Bridge, 1.2km of teak over Taungthaman Lake at Amarapura, is the sunrise shot. Mahamuni Buddha is the country's most venerated image after Shwedagon.
Visa: Myanmar's e-Visa is $50 for 28 days, applied online at evisa.moip.gov.mm. International flights are limited; most entries route via Bangkok with one or two carriers operating. Climate: hot dry Feb-May (40°C+), monsoon Jun-Sep, cool dry Oct-Jan is the only sensible window.

Annual mean 24.3 µg/m³ is unhealthy for sensitive groups, pack a mask for the April spike, and consider an air purifier if you stay long-term. The 37 µg/m³ swing between worst and best month is large, month-of-travel matters more here than in stable cities.
