A furnished one-bedroom near the central Shymkent Bazaar costs $250-400/month. The bazaar itself is the largest in Kazakhstan, go for lepyoshka bread, horse sausage, and dried apricots from Uzbek traders crossing the border 90km south. Local meals run $3-5, taxis are $1.50 across town via Yandex Go.
Summers (June-August) hit +38°C with dry steppe heat. Winters (December-February) sit around -5°C, mild by Kazakh standards. April-May and September-October are the sweet spots. Sayram, the medieval Silk Road predecessor town, is 15km east. Aksu-Zhabagly nature reserve, Central Asia's oldest, is 90 minutes south.
30-day visa-free for US/EU/UK. Russian dominates; Kazakh is gaining ground especially among younger residents. English will get you nowhere outside two or three hotels. Coworking doesn't really exist, work from your apartment or a Coffeedelia cafe near Al-Farabi Square.
Internet is 100 Mbps for $8/month. Safety is fine, this is a family city, not a party city. Alcohol is available but the culture is more conservative than Almaty.

Cleanest air in August (9 µg/m³); worst in December (30 µg/m³).
Annual mean 17.3 µg/m³ is moderate, sensitive groups (asthma, kids, elderly) should time longer stays to the cleaner half of the year. The 21 µg/m³ swing between worst and best month is large, month-of-travel matters more here than in stable cities.
