editorial
The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
A one-bedroom in the Al Aijah peninsula district runs 180-280 OMR ($470-730) furnished, Oman is Gulf-priced. A guesthouse room: 25-40 OMR a night. Shuwa (slow-cooked meat) at a local restaurant on the Corniche: 4 OMR ($10). The Wadi Shab swimming-cave hike (45 minutes north, 15 OMR per person for boat-in and guide): 4-hour return trip, water shoes mandatory.
Friction: Sur is hot, May to September pushes 42°C and humidity at the coast is brutal. The dhow yard at Al Aijah is genuinely the last operational one in the Gulf, but it's a working yard, not a museum; ask politely before photographing. Ras Al Hadd / Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve (1h southeast) requires a booked night-tour through the visitor center (7 OMR), green turtles nest year-round but May-October is peak. The Sur Maritime Museum (free) is small and excellent. The Sur-Muscat highway is 2.5 hours and the road is well-maintained but speed cameras are constant.
Visa: Oman eVisa OMR 20 ($52) for most Western passports, valid 30 days, processed in 24 hours. Arabic; English widely spoken in business. Alcohol is restricted to licensed hotel bars. The Friday-Saturday weekend means government and most local businesses close. Internet via Omantel fibre is solid. Driving is mandatory, public transport between Sur and the wadis is essentially non-existent.
