How ExpatWhy works.

1,001 cities ·
13 sources ·
zero secrets

Four composite scores per city, a decision engine, verified primary-source data on disaster risk, air quality and tax. Every formula is below. Every source is clickable. The full license map sits in /LICENSES.md.

the four composite scores

Each score is a weighted blend, open below.

These are our own composite indices. Useful for sorting, but they are not externally validated. The Tax & Stay card and the Decision Engine use ONLY verified primary-source inputs.

Nomad.

The classic digital-nomad balance, cost-of-living, infrastructure and weather. Best for arbitrage seekers and remote workers picking a 3-12 month base.

decision engine · open weights

How the /start ranking is built.

The 6-question wizard at /start filters cities by visa-eligibility for your passport and stay length, then scores the remaining ones with the weights at right. Implementation is open at /src/lib/decision-engine.ts.

Visa-gating is a hard filter, and it checks exactly two things: days of visa-free entry on your passport, and whether the country runs a digital nomad visa. Cities that don't cover the chosen stay length on either count are dropped before scoring. Work, study, family, ancestry and employer-sponsored routes aren't modelled, so this is a statement about visa-free access, not about where you may legally live. After that, the weights below apply.

  • Cost comfortably inside budget+20
  • Cost within budget+10
  • Cost tight on budget−10
  • Cost over budget−30
  • Each must-have matched+15
  • Each deal-breaker hit−25
  • Persona index bonus (nomad / solo / family / wellbeing)+0 to +10
