Asmara is the most intact Italian-Modernist city on earth, frozen by 30 years of isolation under one of the world's most repressive governments.
editorial
The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
The city was built 1936-41 under Italian fascist colonization as a showcase for futurist and rationalist architecture, and because Eritrea has been effectively closed to outside investment since independence in 1993, nothing has been demolished. UNESCO listed the entire city center in 2017. The Fiat Tagliero futurist gas station (1938, concrete wings cantilevered 15m unsupported) is the icon; Cinema Roma, Cinema Impero, and Bar Zilli are all preserved and operating.
Long-term rentals are nearly impossible to arrange as a foreigner, hotels run ERN 1,500-3,000/night ($20-60 at unofficial rates) and most visitors stay at the Asmara Palace or smaller pensione.
Friction is everything else. The visa is genuinely difficult: apply in advance through an Eritrean embassy with a letter of invitation, processing 4-8 weeks, no tourist visa-on-arrival exists. Travel permits required to leave Asmara, even day trips need government paperwork. The state is one-party authoritarian; conscription is indefinite. Internet is heavily restricted and slow.
Climate is the gift, at 2,325m elevation, year-round 15-25°C, dry and clear. Italian-Catholic and Eritrean-Orthodox heritage both visible. Tigrinya and Arabic official; Italian still spoken by older generations. Cash only, bring USD, exchange carefully.
