Isfahan is the Iranian city the country sends foreigners to first, Safavid-era architecture, a walkable old centre, and tour guides who actually speak English.

The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
A guesthouse room near Naqsh-e Jahan Square runs 60-120 million IRR/night (roughly $85-170 at open-market rates), with monthly rentals in Jolfa, the Armenian quarter, around 100-220 million IRR/month ($140-315). Naqsh-e Jahan is one of the largest plazas on Earth, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque on the east, Imam Mosque on the south, Ali Qapu Palace on the west, the Grand Bazaar entrance on the north. Si-o-se-pol's thirty-three arches and Khaju Bridge anchor the river to the south.
Friction: the Zayanderud river is often dry. Water diversion for agriculture upstream means the bridges arch over sand for months at a time, mostly summer. Locals are not happy about it and will tell you. Climate is otherwise mild four-season, visit April-May or October-November and skip July-August (35°C+) and January (near freezing).
Visa: 30-day VOA for many EU passports at IKA or Shiraz, then domestic flight or six-hour bus from Tehran. US, UK, Canadian passports need pre-approved tour visa plus guide. Cash only, sarafi at the bazaar. English is workable in Jolfa cafes and at major sights, weaker elsewhere.

Cleanest air in April (18 µg/m³); worst in November (49 µg/m³).
Annual mean 28.2 µg/m³ is unhealthy for sensitive groups, pack a mask for the November spike, and consider an air purifier if you stay long-term. The 31 µg/m³ swing between worst and best month is large, month-of-travel matters more here than in stable cities.
