Malé is the most densely populated capital on earth, 150,000 people on 1.5 square kilometers, and almost nobody who visits the Maldives actually sees it.

The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
Apartments in Malé proper run MVR 18,000-30,000 ($1,200-2,000) monthly for a small furnished unit; most foreign workers live in Hulhumalé (the reclaimed-island suburb connected by the Sinamalé Bridge) where rents drop to MVR 12,000-20,000. The Hukuru Miskiy, Old Friday Mosque, 1656 coral-stone construction with intricate lacquered woodwork, is the genuine cultural landmark, UNESCO-tentative-listed. Tsunami Monument commemorates the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 102 in the country.
Malé is where you learn that the Maldives is a real country, not a resort archipelago. Eight-story buildings packed wall-to-wall, motorbikes everywhere, no beaches in the capital, almost no tourist infrastructure. The ferry terminal sends boats to the resort-islands every 20 minutes.
Friction is the alcohol-and-conservative-Islam reality. Maldives is 100% Sunni Muslim by law, alcohol is illegal in Malé and on local islands (legal only on designated resort-islands). Dress conservatively on inhabited islands; bikinis are for "tourist beaches" only on local islands. Pork is banned. Friday afternoon prayers shut everything.
Climate is equatorial: 26-31°C year-round, humid, 1,900mm rain mostly May-October. Maldives gives 30-day visa-free entry to all passports on arrival. Dhivehi and English. USD widely accepted.

Cleanest air in June (6 µg/m³); worst in January (21 µg/m³).
Annual mean 10.1 µg/m³ is moderate, sensitive groups (asthma, kids, elderly) should time longer stays to the cleaner half of the year. The 16 µg/m³ swing between worst and best month is large, month-of-travel matters more here than in stable cities.
