Mestia is the medieval Svan highland village three hours north of any usable airport, stone defensive towers, a Soviet-era ski lift, and roughly two thousand permanent residents.

The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
Family-run guesthouses in the centro or in Lanchvali run GEL 80–150 ($30–55) a night; nobody rents monthly in a formal sense and almost nobody stays that long. Khachapuri kubdari (Svan meat pie) is the local headline at GEL 15 ($5.50). Wifi is genuinely bad, Starlink is starting to appear at a few higher-end guesthouses, but most of the village runs on 10–20 Mbps if you are lucky. Do not plan to work from here.
At 1,500m the climate is severe alpine. June–September is the trekking window (15–22°C days, cool nights); the Mestia–Ushguli four-day trek runs in this band. October–April is winter, with heavy snow, a small ski operation at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, and frequent road closures on the access road from Zugdidi.
The Svan towers, squat 9th–12th-century stone defensive structures, two or three per family compound, are what UNESCO inscribed. Roughly 175 of them survive across Upper Svaneti. The Mikhail Khergiani museum honors the Svan climber who died on the Italian Dolomites in 1969 and reads like a regional confession of pride and grief. Ushguli, 45km further east, is the highest year-round inhabited settlement in Europe at 2,200m and is the natural trek endpoint. Tbilisi to Mestia is a 9-hour drive or a 1-hour flight in a small turboprop that cancels routinely. Georgia 365 days visa-free. Russian helps with older guesthouse owners; Svan is its own Kartvelian language and you will hear it on the street.

National-average international-school primary tuition, aggregated from published 2025/26 fee schedules across the country's international schools. Country baseline, not anchored to schools in this specific city; the real figure for a given school varies with tier, location and grade. Preschool = full-day international preschool, annual. Secondary is an estimate, modelled as a published uplift over primary (low +20%, typical +30%, high +40%), since secondary tuition rises with grade; it is not a separately sourced figure.
Tuition only. Excludes one-off enrolment/capital levies, school bus, lunch, uniforms and exam fees, which add materially at most schools.
