Every line above sourced to a public primary reference. Tier 1 = all components verified for this city/country; Tier 2 = rent verified + country-baseline components; Tier 3 = approximate. Solo nomad baseline assumes one person, central 1-bedroom, modest groceries, 20 GB mobile, 4 paid coworking days/month. Where the rent basis above notes a private-market premium, expat condo budgets run higher than this baseline.

New York doesn't pretend to be optimized for digital nomads, the city operates as if every visitor is here to extract or contribute to a deal, and remote work fits in the gaps.
editorial
The case & the friction.
The case is the network. The density of investors, founders, agencies and journalists per square kilometer is unmatched globally; six months in Brooklyn or Manhattan opens doors that years of LinkedIn cannot. Coworking is everywhere (Industrious, Convene, NeueHouse premium tier) and the WiFi café network is genuinely good.
The friction is cost. A 1-bedroom in Williamsburg, East Village, Park Slope, or Astoria runs $3,500-5,500; Manhattan median is closer to $4,000-5,000. Sub-letting an existing lease is the rational route; full leasing requires a guarantor or 40× rent income. ESTA covers 90 days for most EU passports. The US work-visa landscape tightened sharply in late 2025: a Presidential proclamation added a $100,000 supplemental fee on new H-1B petitions, which has reshaped what employer-sponsored relocations look like. O-1 and E-2 remain viable for the right profile. No dedicated nomad visa exists.
Air is moderate (PM2.5 around 7-9 µg/m³ annual, with episodic spikes from Canadian wildfires summer 2023). Hurricane exposure exists (Sandy 2012 was within memory) but most storm tracks pass east. Subway is 24/7 and the great urban infrastructure of the continent; outside the subway zones, you don't live in New York.

National-average international-school primary tuition, aggregated from published 2025/26 fee schedules across the country's international schools. Country baseline, not anchored to schools in this specific city; the real figure for a given school varies with tier, location and grade. Preschool = full-day international preschool, annual. Secondary is an estimate, modelled as a published uplift over primary (low +20%, typical +30%, high +40%), since secondary tuition rises with grade; it is not a separately sourced figure.
Tuition only. Excludes one-off enrolment/capital levies, school bus, lunch, uniforms and exam fees, which add materially at most schools.
