Solo nomad baseline assumes one person, central 1-bedroom, modest groceries, 20 GB mobile, 4 paid coworking days/month. Where the rent basis above notes a private-market premium, expat condo budgets run higher than this baseline.

A central one-bedroom in Debar Maalo or near the Stone Bridge runs $350-550/month, and lunch at a kafana sits at $5-8. The Skopje 2014 project covered the centre in neoclassical statues and Greek-revival facades over Yugoslav-era buildings, locals are divided, and you'll either find it ironic or unbearable. The Mother Teresa Memorial House and the old Ottoman Bazaar across the Vardar are the actual draws. Lake Ohrid is a three-hour drive south.
Winter is the dealbreaker. From November to February, PM2.5 routinely hits 60-100 (occasionally 200+ on inversion days) from coal heating and the valley's geography. Anyone with asthma or a child should not be here December through February. May through September is clean and warm, 30-35°C in July.
North Macedonia gives most Schengen-passport holders 90 days visa-free in any 180-day window. English is functional in the centre, less so in residential districts. The nomad scene is small but growing around Public Room coworking. Wages are low, which keeps the cost base genuinely cheap rather than gentrification-cheap.

Cleanest air in July (10 µg/m³); worst in December (44 µg/m³).
Annual mean 20 µg/m³ is moderate, sensitive groups (asthma, kids, elderly) should time longer stays to the cleaner half of the year. The 34 µg/m³ swing between worst and best month is large, month-of-travel matters more here than in stable cities.
