the continent · europe
Europe, walkable and overpriced.
The continent where rent went up faster than salaries and yet the case still writes itself, trains that work, tap water you drink, and a long-stay visa map finally catching up to demand.
the region rewards
- , walkable cores
- , five-year residency routes
- , rail networks that actually work
the region punishes
- , Schengen 90/180 for non-EU
- , rent inflation in the obvious cities
- , dark, wet winters above 45°N
Europe is the safest, most legible base for remote work, until you look at a rent index. Lisbon and Barcelona, the two cities that built the modern nomad scene, have priced out the version of themselves people came for. The interesting cities in 2026 are one rung down: Porto, Valencia, Krakow, Tbilisi, Tallinn, places with the same walkable cores and a third of the Schengen-clock-and-rent stress.
The legal map is the real story. Spain's DNV, Portugal's D8, Germany's Freiberufler, Estonia's e-Residency-plus-DNV pathway, and Italy's belated Visto Nomadi Digitali turn the EU into one large country if you have an income above ~€3,000/month. North of the Alps the trade is different, clean air, dark winters, a tax bill that takes the conversation out of "cheap" and into "covered."
