The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
One-bedroom in the Medina or near Boujaffar Beach runs 1,000-1,400 TND ($320-450) furnished. Move 5km north to Port El Kantaoui marina and you pay 1,800 TND ($570) for sea-view and tourist polish. Coffee at a café off the Place des Martyrs: 2 TND ($0.65). Couscous lunch: 12 TND ($3.80).
Friction: June through August the coast is wall-to-wall European package tourists and prices spike 30-40%. The Aghlabid Ribat and the Great Mosque sit right in the Medina but the souks are aggressively tout-heavy, first price is always 3x. Winter (Dec-Feb) the wind off the Med is brutal and most beach restaurants close. The Archaeological Museum mosaic collection is genuinely second only to the Bardo, but the city loses tempo October to April.
Visa: 90-day visa-free for most Western passports. Tunisian dinar is non-convertible, you cannot legally take TND out, so don't over-exchange. French gets you everywhere; Arabic helps in the souk. Safety is fine in the tourist zones, less so in the inland Sahline neighborhoods after dark. Trains to Tunis run hourly for 8 TND.
