Tabriz is Azeri-Turkish Iran, a 1.5-million-person northwest capital where Persian is the second language and the bazaar has been continuously trading for a thousand years.

The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
Rent in Valiasr or Abrasan districts runs 70-140 million IRR/month (about $100-200 open-market), cheaper than Tehran or Isfahan. The Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex (UNESCO 2010) is roughly a kilometre of vaulted brick labyrinth, one of the oldest covered markets in the Middle East and still a functioning commercial centre, carpets, gold, spices, leather. The Blue Mosque, badly damaged in the 1779 earthquake, still shows fragments of its original tilework. El Goli Park's artificial lake and pavilion are where locals walk at sunset.
Friction: winter is real winter. December through February brings snow, lows of -5 to -10°C, and the bazaar shutters early. Summer (June-August) is mild around 25-30°C, actually the best time, unlike most of Iran. Tabriz is also the launching point for the Kandovan rock-village day-trip and overland into Armenia or Turkey.
Visa: 30-day VOA for many EU passports at TBZ airport, $75-150. US, UK, Canadian still need pre-approved tour visa plus guide. Cash only, change euros at a sarafi near the bazaar. Azeri-Turkish dominates daily life; Persian is the formal language; English is patchy.
