The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
Off-season (November-April) a furnished one-bedroom near the Bodrum Castle marina runs 20,000-30,000 TRY ($605-910). June through September the same flat hits 90,000-120,000 TRY ($2,725-3,635), landlords openly prefer Airbnb at €200/night over a long lease. Plan around this or don't come.
The castle itself sits on the site of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the original Seven Wonders. Crusaders dismantled the Mausoleum for stone in 1402, which is its own kind of historical injury. The Underwater Archaeology Museum inside is genuinely worth the entry. Gümüşlük on the west peninsula has the best sunset dinner spots in Turkey.
Mediterranean summer is brutal, July-August hits 35°C with zero rain and the town turns into a pressure cooker of superyachts and Istanbul money. October-November and April-May are when the place becomes livable: warm sea, empty restaurants, half-price rooms.
Turkey 90/180 visa-free or the $3k/month DNV. English is unusually strong here because the summer crowd demands it. Yacht charters, dive shops and beach clubs run in English by default.
Food is overpriced in summer (€25 fish dinners) and reasonable in winter (€8).

National-average international-school primary tuition, aggregated from published 2025/26 fee schedules across the country's international schools. Country baseline, not anchored to schools in this specific city; the real figure for a given school varies with tier, location and grade. Preschool = full-day international preschool, annual. Secondary is an estimate, modelled as a published uplift over primary (low +20%, typical +30%, high +40%), since secondary tuition rises with grade; it is not a separately sourced figure.
Tuition only. Excludes one-off enrolment/capital levies, school bus, lunch, uniforms and exam fees, which add materially at most schools.
