Ganja is Azerbaijan's quiet second city, half the price of Baku, twice as conservative, and built around the tomb of the 12th-century poet Nizami.

A furnished one-bedroom near Heydar Aliyev Park costs $200-350/month. Ganja's signature oddity is the Bottle House, a private residence built from 50,000 glass bottles in 1966-67. The Nizami Mausoleum, 7km outside the city, is a 1991 marble cylinder honoring the Persian-language poet born here in 1141. Goygol Lake, formed by an 1139 earthquake, is 40 minutes south.
Hot dry continental summers (July-August hit +35°C), cold winters (-3°C in January, occasional snow). April-June and September-October are the working windows. The Kura River valley keeps the air drier than Baku's Caspian humidity.
eVisa is $25 online, processed in three days, valid 30 days. Azerbaijani is the working language; Russian is widespread among older residents; English is essentially absent outside the one or two upscale hotels. The 2020-2023 Karabakh conflict ended Armenian-stamp passport problems but tensions remain, don't bring up the war.
Plov, dolma, and qutab cost $2-4. Alcohol is available but the culture is noticeably more conservative than Baku. Internet is 80 Mbps for $12/month with periodic filtering of opposition media. No coworking.
