A furnished one-bedroom near Vardanants Square costs $200-300/month. The Kumayri district holds Armenia's best-preserved 19th-century Russian-imperial architecture, tuff-stone facades, carved balconies, and the kind of melancholic beauty you don't get in Yerevan. The Black Fortress (Sev Berd), built by the Russians in 1834 to watch the Ottoman border, sits on a hill west of town.
Cold continental climate. January averages -8°C with deep snow; July hits +28°C. May-June and September-October are the working windows. The 1988 Spitak earthquake leveled 80% of Gyumri, many residents still live in temporary domiks (metal containers) issued as emergency housing.
Armenia gives 180-day visa-free for almost every Western passport, among the most generous regimes globally. Armenian uses its own alphabet; Russian is workable with anyone over 40; English is patchy but improving among the under-30 crowd. Khorovats (Armenian BBQ), khash, and dolma cost $5-8 a meal.
Internet is 100 Mbps for $12/month and unfiltered. One serious coworking space (GTC, Gyumri Technology Center) is the unexpected highlight, full of young Armenian engineers. Banking with foreign cards works.
