Klaipėda is Lithuania's only seaport, the former German Hanseatic Memel, and the launch point for the Curonian Spit dune peninsula.
editorial
The case & the friction.
ExpatWhy editorial
A one-bedroom in the Old Town or near the ferry terminal runs €500–720. The Old Town keeps its half-timbered Hanseatic layout, Klaipėda was Memel until 1923 and the German bones still show. The Curonian Spit (UNESCO), a 98 km sand-dune peninsula shared with Russia's Kaliningrad exclave, sits a five-minute ferry from the city. The Sea Festival in late July is the largest event in the Baltic states.
Friction: winters are cold, dark, and wet, January averages around zero, with frequent sea fog and only six and a half hours of daylight at solstice. The Baltic stays unswimmable until late June. The city itself is small (152k), outside the Old Town and the university quarter, it's a working port with the atmosphere of a working port. Coworking exists but limited.
Visa: Lithuania uses standard 90/180 Schengen for non-EU. Startup Lithuania runs a fast-track founder visa for non-EU tech entrepreneurs, twelve months initial, renewable, with a relatively low capital threshold. EU passports stay indefinitely. EUR currency removes all FX friction.
Very safe, English strong among under-40s, Russian still common in older generations, German useful given the Memel heritage.
